In an interview I did last week with Dr. Colleen van Lent she confessed she was leaving CSULB after this semester. She is a CECS undergraduate advisor, and professor in computer programming and artificial intelligence.
Her reason for leaving is her husband, Mike, got a new job in Michagan with a technology company, and they can't pass up the opportunity. Her plans for the future are to take a few years off to raise her two kids, Christopher and Catherine, then try and get a job at a local university.
Other projects she will still be involved with include: writing a programming textbook because she doesn't like any of the current textbooks, and she is also in development with a software company trying to develop a game that makes playing chess more fun to the user. Instead of having the AI try pulverize you into oblivion in six turns it will instead adapt to user moves and try to keep the game challenging and fun at the same time.
I talk with Dr. van Lent about every week. I go to her for advice about college and about personal issues. She is a great person, and an amazing professor. The Engineering department is losing an amazing faculty member. I wish her nothing but the best in the future.
