It was a landslide victory for Barack Obama, who defeated John McCain in the 2008 Presidential Election. Once key battleground states like Ohio Indiana and Florida went his way, it was mathematically impossible for McCain to mount a comeback. The overwhelming electoral vote of 349 to 163, and 53 percent of the popular vote, made it clear who the American people wanted as president of the United States.
Voter participation was a key element for Obama's victory, with the biggest
turn-out ever for a presidential election. The youth, Latino and black votes were a huge boost for Obama. People were waiting to see if these demographics would actually come out to the polls this election and they did in record numbers. When looking at the districts of Republican states, Obama did very well where there were universities and that made him competitive even in traditionally red states.
As I mentioned in my previous post, we now have a ruling majority. It will be interesting to see how much the Democrats can do with their new found power and if President-Elect Obama even has to reach across party lines to get his ideas passed.
I was impressed with Obama's acceptance speech last night. He was subtle in his approach. It would have been easy to get everyone excited, and shout that he had won the presidency, but instead he took a serious approach and let the people know what was in store for the future. He consistently used words like “we, us and our” to let people know that it was their victory as well as his. To me it seems this campaign has changed him, he is now a man determined to get this country back on track.
